Discussing Denver Plastic Surgery With Children: How Did You Discuss Your Decision To Undergo Cosmetic Surgery?

September 23, 2014 by Atagi Plastic Surgery & Skin Aesthetics

A recent article on RealSelf.com broached a very important question.  We come across this question very frequently here at Atagi Plastic Surgery & Atagi Skin Aesthetics as so many of the patients who come through out doors are interested in “Mommy Makeovers”; cosmetic surgical procedures that let moms reclaim their pre-pregnancy body, from a flatter abdomen (tummy tuck), a slimmer shape (liposuction), a lifted, fuller bust (breast lift and breast implants) and much more.

While only a parent can know what is right to discuss with their child, this recent article was very enlightening. If you’re wondering how and if you should reveal your cosmetic plans to your child, keep reading.

“After months (maybe even years) of consideration, you’ve finally decided to get a procedure that will boost your confidence and maybe even bring a little spice into your relationship. You’ve done your research, you’ve found the perfect doctor, and you’re surely excited to see the final results,” the article stated. “But there are a few more questions that need answering — questions that the even the best plastic surgeon might not be able to address. How do I tell my kids I’m getting plastic surgery?”

Here at Atagi Plastic Surgery & Atagi Skin Aesthetics, we believe there are a variety of ways to discuss the topic of cosmetic surgery with kids in a healthy manner. Many parents opt to tell their children, typically when the kids are of school age, and can understand what plastic surgery is. These parents use it as an opportunity to begin a dialogue about how body image and how one looks often impacts how one feels.

“I think the right approach is to plainly explain that there was something you were unhappy with and you decided to fix it,” said Dan Ariely, a three-time New York Times bestselling author and Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, who was quoted in the article.
